St Paul’s Letter to Philemon

Paul’s letter to Philemon is an appeal to his co-worker and friend Philemon to be gentle in receiving back the slave Onesimus.

Paul’s letter to Philemon is an appeal to his co-worker and friend Philemon to be gentle in receiving back the slave Onesimus. Paul has become fond of Onesimus and thought of keeping him for himself, but decided he should send him back. Paul urges the master to treat his slave like a brother, and offers to pay for any loss Philemon may have suffered in Onesimus’ absence. During the American Civil War, Christians defended and condemned slavery by appealing to the Bible for support. Slavery is taken for granted in the New Testament. In Colossians he wrote, “Slaves, obey your human masters in everything…” (3:22). The inclusion of Philemon in the Bible does not imply acceptance of slavery. This letter is an appeal to treat fellow believers, no matter their social status, with respect and love.
