The Ascension

As he prepared to ascend into heaven, Jesus gave his followers the “Great Commission”: to go make disciples and be witnesses of everything he taught. How are you doing with the assignment?

Most of us want someone more qualified to take on working to bring folks to the faith. But Jesus did not say that he was limiting the task to the highly qualified, say, those who went to the seminar or earned university theology degrees.

All of us have this commission in our heavenly job description. If we don’t respond, he notices. In fact, he puts hundreds of opportunities in our daily lives to be witnesses. We do not have to ring doorbells. We can share a prayer with a hurting friend. We can invite our grown children to church. We can send a sympathy card to a grieving widow. There are as many ways to share the message of the kingdom as there are people. We all would rather mind our own business. It is just that we have forgotten that God’s business is our business as well. It’s time to get busy doing it. God needs us to bring about his kingdom in the ordinary places our lives take us this week. There is quite enough grace in our souls to do the good work.
